Alanya Travel Guide: The Castle, the Red Tower and the Beaches

East of Antalya, built on a rocky peninsula reaching into the Mediterranean, Alanya combines history with a beach holiday. With its long sands, medieval castle and lively seafront, it is a resort that appeals to travellers of every age.

Alanya Castle and the Red Tower
Wrapping the top of the peninsula, the Seljuk-era Alanya Castle, with its walls and historic buildings, is the emblem of the city; the view of the bays stretching to either side from the summit is breathtaking. The octagonal Red Tower (Kızıl Kule) at the harbour is the city's best-known structure and, together with the shipyard, carries the traces of maritime history.

Beaches and sea caves
With Cleopatra Beach's fine sand and clear sea, the in-town beaches are very convenient. Boat trips from the harbour call at sea caves such as the Phosphorus Cave and the Lovers' Cave, offering a pleasant day with swimming stops. The Damlataş Cave in the city centre also makes for a cool break.

When to go and tips
Late spring, summer and early autumn are ideal for the sea; Alanya's swimming season is long. Visiting the castle in the afternoon light lets you also catch the sunset. Keep comfortable shoes and sun protection with you.

Exploring Alanya and its surroundings makes for a few enjoyable days. Planning your accommodation options in the region in advance helps you make the most of your holiday.
