Assos (Behramkale) Guide: The Temple of Athena and the Ancient Harbour

In the Ayvacık district of Çanakkale, built on a volcanic hill facing the Aegean, Assos was one of the important cultural centres of antiquity. Now known as Behramkale, the area brings history and sea together with its hilltop temple, stone-house village and small ancient harbour.

The Temple of Athena and the ancient city
When the Doric columns of the Temple of Athena at the summit combine with the Aegean view stretching all the way to the island of Lesbos, the result is an unforgettable scene; at sunset it is magical. The surrounding ancient theatre, agora and walls shed light on the past of the city where Aristotle once lived.

Behramkale village and the ancient harbour
The stone-house village of Behramkale at the summit, with its narrow streets and Ottoman bridge, makes for a nostalgic break. The steep road down from the top reaches the small ancient harbour, where restored stone buildings have become hotels and restaurants; a seaside meal makes for a pleasant close.

When to go and tips
Spring and autumn are the most ideal times; summer is hot but the sea cools you off. The road from the village down to the harbour is narrow and steep and calls for careful driving. Timing the temple for sunset crowns the trip.

Exploring Assos and its surroundings makes for an enjoyable day. Planning your accommodation options in the region in advance helps you make the most of your visit.
