Bursa and Uludağ Guide: Ottoman Mosques, the Mountain and Cumalıkızık

South of the Marmara, built at the foot of lush Uludağ, Bursa is the first capital of the Ottoman state. With its monumental mosques, historic bazaars and mountain backdrop, the city brings history and nature together in a single trip. It is not called "Green Bursa" for nothing.

The first Ottoman capital
With its twenty domes and magnificent examples of calligraphy inside, the Grand Mosque is the heart of the city. The Green Mosque, famous for its tilework, and the Green Tomb opposite are among the most graceful works of early Ottoman architecture. The historic Covered Bazaar and Koza Han carry the traces of the silk trade to the present.

Uludağ and Cumalıkızık
Reached by cable car from the city centre, Uludağ is one of Turkey's most popular ski resorts in winter and a cool nature escape in summer. On its slopes, Cumalıkızık is a preserved Ottoman village with colourful houses hundreds of years old; having breakfast in its stone streets is a delight.

When to go and tips
Spring and autumn are ideal for the city, while winter is the best time to ski on Uludağ. The cable car can be crowded on busy days, so an early start is an advantage. Be sure to try İskender kebab and candied chestnuts.

Exploring Bursa and Uludağ together makes for a full day. Planning your accommodation options in the region in advance helps you make the most of your visit.
