Göbekli Tepe Travel Guide: The World's Oldest Temple and Şanlıurfa

Near Şanlıurfa, Göbekli Tepe is a discovery that fundamentally changed what we know of history. Built around twelve thousand years ago, before settled agriculture had even begun, this monumental site is regarded as the world's oldest known temple structure and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The world's oldest temple
At the centre of the site's circular structures rise colossal T-shaped pillars carved with reliefs of foxes, snakes, vultures and wild boar. That communities raised these stones thousands of years ago, before they even had metal tools, stirs deep wonder in every visitor. The site, sheltered by a roof, is explored along designated walkways.

Şanlıurfa: Balıklıgöl, the bazaar and cuisine
To round out your trip, be sure to visit central Şanlıurfa. The sacred, legend-laden Balıklıgöl (Pool of Sacred Fish), the courtyard mosques around it and the historic bazaar reflect the city's soul. The sıra gecesi tradition, coppersmithing and a rich cuisine ranging from çiğ köfte to lahmacun make Urfa unforgettable.

When to go and tips
As the region is very hot in summer, spring and autumn are the most ideal times; in summer an early start, a hat and plenty of water are essential. Göbekli Tepe is a short drive from the centre. Planning the site and the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum together completes the experience.

Exploring Göbekli Tepe and Şanlıurfa together makes for a full day. Planning your accommodation options in the region in advance helps you make the most of your visit.
