Kekova Travel Guide: The Sunken City, Simena and Demre

Off the coast of Antalya's Demre district, spread over some of the Mediterranean's clearest waters, the Kekova area is a unique route where nature and history intertwine. Ancient ruins that sank underwater in earthquakes can still be made out beneath the glass-clear sea.

The Sunken City and the boat trip
Stretching along the northern shore of Kekova Island, the Sunken City is striking with its staircases, foundations and sarcophagi visible above and below the water. The finest way to explore the area is by glass-bottomed or open boat tours, with swimming stops in certain bays.

Simena (Kaleköy) and Demre
Reached by land or boat, Simena (Kaleköy) is a fairy-tale village with its hilltop medieval castle and Lycian sarcophagi half-submerged in the sea; the Kekova view from the castle is breathtaking. In nearby Demre you can see the rock tombs and theatre of the ancient city of Myra, along with the Church of St. Nicholas (Santa Claus).

When to go and tips
Late spring, summer and early autumn are ideal for both the sea and the boat trip. Diving and swimming at the Sunken City are restricted to certain areas for conservation; following the rules matters. Keep sun protection, a hat and swimwear with you.

Exploring Kekova and its surroundings makes for an enjoyable day. Planning your accommodation options in the region in advance helps you make the most of your visit.
