Letoon Ancient City: A Guide to Lycia's Sacred Sanctuary

Just a short distance from Kalkan, near the edge of the village of Kınık, lies Letoon, a sanctuary at the spiritual heart of the Lycian civilisation. Surrounded by quiet olive groves and reedy wetlands, this ancient site preserves the traces of a faith that endured for thousands of years. As a neighbour to Xanthos, the capital of Lycia, Letoon is one of the most evocative archaeological stops in the region.

The History and Sacred Identity of Letoon

Letoon takes its name from Leto, the goddess who in mythology was the mother of Apollo and Artemis. In antiquity the site served as the shared religious centre of the Lycian League, a meeting point for both sacred ceremonies and important political decisions. Dedicated to the trio of Leto, Apollo and Artemis, the sanctuary drew worshippers from across Lycia for centuries.

What to See: Three Temples, the Nymphaeum and the Theatre

The most striking structures at Letoon are the three temples standing side by side. Each was dedicated in turn to Leto, Apollo and Artemis, letting you compare distinct architectural styles in one place. Nearby, the nymphaeum, or sacred fountain, often fills with water and lends the site a singular atmosphere. The well-preserved ancient theatre, meanwhile, offers a glimpse into the social life of the city.

Its Bond with Xanthos and UNESCO Status

Letoon forms an inseparable pair with Xanthos, lying roughly six kilometres away. While Xanthos was the political and administrative centre, Letoon was the heart of religious life. The two settlements were inscribed together on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988. Letoon is also renowned for housing the longest and most valuable stone inscriptions in the Lycian language, an invaluable resource for scholars.

How to Get There

The easiest way to reach Letoon is to head for the village of Kınık along the Kalkan to Kaş road. Just a short drive from Kalkan, signposts in the village guide you straight to the archaeological site. With your own vehicle access is simple, and you can easily add Xanthos to the same day's itinerary.

Visiting Tips

Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons to visit, as the summer months can be very hot. Since there is almost no shade on the site, a hat, sunscreen and water are essential. A visit takes about one to one and a half hours. Early morning is best for both cooler temperatures and a calmer, quieter experience.

Where to Stay in Kalkan

Making Kalkan your base while exploring Letoon and the area's ancient treasures keeps everything comfortable and close at hand. For travellers who want to roam the region with ease, villa rentals in Kalkan offer private pools, sea views and a relaxed holiday.
