Patara Guide: Beach, Dunes and Ancient City

One of the few stretches of the Mediterranean coast that still keeps much of its natural character, Patara welcomes countless travellers each year with both its sweeping beach and its ancient heritage. It is an ideal stop for anyone who wants to swim in the sea and walk among thousands of years of stone ruins in a single day.
Patara Beach and Its Dunes
Patara Beach is known as one of the longest shores in Turkey, with roughly 18 kilometres of fine sand backed by rolling dunes that give the place a distinctive atmosphere. Because the coast is so wide, crowds tend to spread out, and a walk here in the early morning or late afternoon feels wonderfully peaceful.
Loggerhead Turtles and Conservation
The beach is one of the natural nesting grounds where loggerhead sea turtles lay their eggs, which is why it is a protected site. Sections may be closed at certain hours, rules limit lighting after dark and the dunes are carefully preserved so this rare ecosystem can survive for future generations. The best thing visitors can do is leave no trace behind.

Patara Ancient City
Stretching right beside the beach, Patara Ancient City was one of the major harbour towns of the Lycian League and a centre where the league's council (the Bouleuterion) met. A monumental gateway arch, a restored theatre, remains of a broad colonnaded street and one of the oldest lighthouses of the ancient world carry the city's grand past into the present.
How to Get There
Patara sits close to the resort towns of Kaş and Kalkan, around an hour's drive from Kaş. Visitors staying in the area can reach it easily by car, and minibus connections also run in summer. Since both the ancient city and the beach share the same entrance point, it is simple to combine the two in one outing.

Visiting Tips
There is very little natural shade along the shore, so bring a hat, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen and plenty of water. Wear comfortable shoes for exploring the ruins and avoid the midday hours when the sun is strongest. Watching the view over the dunes at sunset is the finest moment of the day.
Where to Stay in Patara
For those who want to explore the region without rushing, the villas nearby make a comfortable base. With villa rentals in Patara you can easily plan a private, peaceful holiday close to both the beach and the ancient city.
