Side Travel Guide: The Temple of Apollo, the Ancient Theatre and Beaches

In the Manavgat district of Antalya, built on the tip of a peninsula, Side is one of those rare places where ancient ruins are interwoven with modern holiday life. Walking among Roman-era structures and swimming a few steps away is what makes Side special.

The Temple of Apollo and the ancient city
At the tip of the peninsula, in a seafront setting, the standing columns of the Temple of Apollo offer an enchanting sight, especially at sunset; it is Side's most photographed spot. The ancient city's colonnaded street, agora and monumental fountain ruins are spread through the town's fabric.

The ancient theatre and beaches
One of the region's largest ancient theatres, the Side Theatre is impressive with its capacity of tens of thousands. The long, golden-sand beaches on either side of the town, with their shallow and clear sea, are ideal for families. The nearby Manavgat Waterfall also offers a cool break.

When to go and tips
Late spring, summer and early autumn are ideal for the sea. The ancient city has little shade; timing the temple for sunset lets you experience history and the view together. Keep comfortable shoes and sun protection with you.

Exploring Side and its surroundings makes for a few enjoyable days. Planning your accommodation options in the region in advance helps you make the most of your holiday.
