Trabzon and Uzungöl Guide: The Lake, Highlands and Sümela Monastery

With the eastern Black Sea's green mountains, abundant rain and mist, the area around Trabzon offers some of Turkey's most distinctive natural scenery. With lakes ringed by pine forests, highlands above the clouds and history-laden monasteries, the region is a favourite for those seeking calm.

Uzungöl and the highlands
About two and a half hours from central Trabzon, Uzungöl is a mountain lake tucked among pine-clad slopes where mist often descends. The walking trails and viewpoints around the lake are soothing. Climb higher and Şekersu and other highlands, with their traditional wooden houses and meadows, open onto an entirely different world above the clouds.

Sümela Monastery
In the Altındere Valley, all but glued to a sheer rock face, Sümela Monastery is the region's most striking structure. Used for centuries as a Greek Orthodox monastery, the frescoes in its rock church and its position overlooking the valley are breathtaking. It is wise to check current access and restoration status before visiting.

When to go and tips
Late spring, summer and early autumn are the greenest and most accessible; as the region is rainy, bring a waterproof jacket and comfortable shoes. Early morning is ideal for both mist and quiet. Be sure to try the local anchovies and muhlama.

Exploring the area around Trabzon and the highlands takes a few days. Planning your accommodation options in the region in advance helps you make the most of your visit.
